THE BOOK OF LUKE by Jenny O'Connell
Entry 1
Date: 4/21/09
Summary: Emily Abbott finds out that she has to move back to Boston in the middle of her senior year. Right before she leaves her boyfriend breaks up with her and leaves her heartbroken. She also finds out that her dad is going to stay in Chicago while the rest of the family moves. When Emily returns to Boston she is reunited with her old friends Josie and Lucy but they have changed a lot. Emily also runs into some old guy friends who have also changed a lot.

Reaction: It sucks that Emily has to move in the middle of her senior year. I think that would suck so bad plus the fact that her serious boyfriend just broke up with her. I would be furious with my parents if they made me do this especially if my dad got to stay in Chicago. I hope the book speeds up its pace because so far it is really slow. I predict that something is going to happen with Emily and her friends Josie and Lucy.

Vocabulary: Ecstatic-subject to or in a state of ecstasy; rapturous

Entry 2
Date: 4/24/09
Summary:Emily meets Luke who is Josie's ex boyfriend who cheated on her. The girls decide to create a book for the time capsule that tells boys how they should act around girls and how they should treat them. They go around and ask all of the girls in the school about problems they have had with boys. They then use this information to start making their book. They decide that they need to test the book out on someone and they choose Josie's ex, Luke.

Reaction: I think the book is a clever idea but it is just asking for trouble. I know Emily is going to end up falling for Luke and they are both going to get hurt in the end. This book is a pretty predictable teen novel.

Vocabulary: Litany- prolonged or tedious account

Entry 3
Date: 4/26/09
Summary: Emily starts out trying to test the book on Luke by asking him to meet her at the school dance. The only problem is that seniors never go to the dance. Emily gets stood up and is furious and wants to quit but Josie and Lucy won't let her. Emily sees Luke at school that next monday and decides to confront him about the whole dance situation. They end up going to lunch at a small diner in town and Emily realizes that she could really like Luke but he is totally off limits because of Josie.

Reaction:I know something bad is going to happen. Emily is falling for her best friends ex boyfriend and that is against all girl rules. I think Luke is going to find out about the book and that is going to cause a lot of drama.

Vocabulary:Feigning-to represent fictitiously; put on an appearance of

Entry 4
Date:5/1/09
Summary: Emily is invited to a party by Luke but she has to babysit some family friends kids. Luke ditches the party to come see her even though she knows she shouldn't have anybody in the house with her. They end up learning a lot about each other and they end up kissing. Emily tells Josie and she she is furious but she forgives her because she knows it is all part of the plan. Emily is also having problems with her family because she doesn't think that her dad and mom are going to get back together.

Reaction: I think it was stupid of Emily to kiss Luke. I know it is part of the plan but is it worth it to betray your friend because it is so obvious that Emily is starting to like Luke. I have a feeling that Emily's parents will stay together because this book seems like the type of book that has a happy ending.

Vocabulary: Pseudo-not actually but having the appearance of; pretended; false or spurious; sham

Entry 5
Date: 5/4/09
Summary: Over spring break the girls go skiing with Luke and some of his guy friends. They all have a blast and Luke and Emily get a lot closer. Now they are a couple and the whole school knows which is a really big deal. Josie is still upset about the situation but she is handling it well. Emily has to write everything she did over spring break down in the book so they can use it later. She leaves a lot of stuff out that happened and put a lot of good stuff in. She is really starting to like Luke and she wants to tell Josie but she doesn't want to hurt her.

Reaction: I know that both Josie and Luke are going to end up getting hurt. Emily is going to get a bad reputation and everybody is going to dislike her. I hope the book gets more interesting because it is really boring right now and it is very predictable.

Vocabulary:Lambasted-to beat or whip severely

Entry 6
Date: 5/5/09
Summary: Emily has her birthday and she is really nervous about what Luke is going to get her. By the end of the day she just figures he isn't going to get her anything but then he surprises her with tickets to a basketball game. It is Boston vs Chicago which she is really excited about because it is both of the towns she has lived in. The date doesn't go as well as Emily had hoped and she feels really bad about it. She then realizes how much she really likes Luke and she forgets that she is pretending to be his girlfriend. She actually feels like she is his girlfriend. She knows things are going to get bad if she doesn't tell Josie and Lucy soon.

Reaction: I think it would be so fun to go to a professional basketball game for my birthday. I don't think Emily appreciated her gift as much as she should have. In this section you really start to see how much Luke cares about Emily and you can already tell that he is going to be hurt badly.

Vocabulary: Impeccable-faultless; flawless; irreproachable

Entry 7
Date: 5/14/09
Summary: Emily's brother finds out about her the book she is making with Josie and Lucy. He is upset that she thinks every guy is the same. He also tells her that her exboyfriend, Sean, called and he wants to see her because he is going to be in town. Emily is really excited about this because he wants to prove to Sean how wrong he was for dumping her. She meets him in the city and lies to him about having a boyfriend. By the end of their get together she realizes that Luke is a lot better than Sean and that she needs to tell him the truth about the book she is making.

Reaction: I have a feeling that Emily telling Luke about the book is really going to upset him. I also think it was super dumb that Emily lied about dating Luke. Sean seems like a total jerk and Emily deserves somebody like Luke not somebody like Sean.

Vocabulary: Gilded-covered or highlighted with gold or something of a golden color.

Entry 8
Date: 5/18/09
Summary: In this part of the book Emily goes with Luke to a college lacrosse practice. Luke wants to play for this lacrosse team when he gets to college and asks Emily if she thinks it is a good idea. Emily is also still debating whether or not she should tell Josie and Lucy that she really cares about Luke and whether or not she should tell Luke about the book she is supposeably making.

Reaction: The books is starting to get slower rather than faster. It is so predictable and I already know what is going to happen. I hope Luke, Josie and Lucy find out soon about all of Emily's lies because I want the book to get interesting.

Vocabulary: Wielding-to exercise (power, authority, influence, etc.), as in ruling or dominating.

Entry 9
Date:5/19/09
Summary: Emily decides that she needs to break up with Luke so she does it through an email. Josie and Lucy still don't know about Emily's true feelings for Luke. Emily ends up telling Josie that she really liked Luke and Josie is furious. Emily decides that it would be a bad idea to put the book in the time capsule so she throws it away. Josie gets the book out of the garbage and decides to give it to Luke. Luke embarrasses Emily in front of the whole school and you can tell that he doesn't care at all.

Reaction: Finally something interesting happened in this book. I have a feeling that everybody is going to forgive everybody. That is just the way these type of books work.

Vocabulary:Groveling- humble oneself or act in an abject manner, as in great fear or utter servility.

Entry 10
Date: 5/21/09
Summary: At the end of this book everybody is pissed at Emily. Josie and Lucy won't talk to her and everytime she is around Luke they just scream at each other. Emily goes to talk to Lucy and Lucy is the first one to forgive her. Emily then goes and talks to Josie. Josie is really mad but she forgives Emily even though they both know everything has changed. Josie then ends up setting up Emily and Luke. The book ends with Emily and Luke sharing a milkshake at the place they had their first date.

Reaction: Overall I didn't really like this book. I am glad everything turned out ok for Emily and Luke but like I have said many times the book was way to predictable.

Vocabulary:Remnants-a remaining, usually small part, quantity, number, or the like.
